 What works with RETIN-A MICRO

You've taken the first step toward clearer skin by choosing RETIN-A MICRO. However, the over-the-counter products you've used for skincare in the past may not work well with your new medication. Here are some pointers to help you make the most of your treatment.

Use a gentle cleanser when you wash your face. Look for something mild and non-medicated that is oil-free and non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) like Neutrogena® Fresh Foaming Cleanser.

Be careful using cleansers or acne products with benzoyl peroxide in them, as this ingredient neutralizes tretinoin, the active ingredient in RETIN-A MICRO, if both are used at the same time. Talk to a doctor before using products with benzoyl peroxide or any other acne-fighting ingredient. Also, watch out for astringents and aftershaves with alcohol, spices or lime. They might irritate your skin.

Use a light moisturizer, preferably one that is non-irritating, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. The moisturizer should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher to protect your sensitive skin from the sun's rays. Try Neutrogena® Healthy Defense® Daily Moisturizer SPF 30. Follow your doctor's advice so you don't use a lotion or cream that will make your acne worse.

Even if you do not wear moisturizer, be sure to wear sunscreen. Using RETIN-A MICRO can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Find a sunscreen that is oil-free-such as a gel- or water-based one-with an SPF factor of 15 or higher.

Most people are able to wear makeup while using RETIN-A MICRO. Just make sure to clean your face before using cosmetics and wash off cosmetics before using the medication. As with cleansers and moisturizers, finding makeup that is non-comedogenic and oil-free is a plus. Talk with your doctor about recommended cosmetics. Neutrogena SkinClearing® oil-free makeup is specially formulated so it won't irritate acne prone skin.

You might not think of your hair as contributing to acne, but it can. The oil in your hair products—from shampoo and conditioner to hair gel—can migrate onto your face when your hair rubs against your complexion during the day or while you sleep. Try to find products that are oil-free or keep your hair away from your face as much as possible.

Ask your doctor if you have any questions about what products you should use.
